Dennis "Boots" Woodall was born on October 9, 1921, in Paulding County, Georgia. His early years were spent in Buckhead, where he learned to play guitar at the age of 10 or 11. He later switched to Hawaiian and then to steel guitar. Woodall's first radio appearance took place as a teenager, on "Uncle Harry's Variety Show" (WAGA); as a young man he was also a member of Bill Gatins' Jug Band (WATL) and Uncle Ned's Texas Wranglers (WSB), on "Cross Roads Follies."
